Orthodontic miniscrews have allowed orthodontists to do so many things they never before could.  Below is an example of the power of what an orthodontic miniscrew can do.  This patient was going to receive a dental implant and instead had orthodontic treatment by Dr. James Noble that involved the placement of orthodontic miniscrews to close the space for her missing premolar.  She was spared the burden of surgery and costs of a dental implant and crown.

Don Mills was planned as a model town that would humanize urban life in an age of industry and the automobile. Initiated and financed by businessman E.P. Taylor and designed by Macklin Hancock, a young urban planner, it was built between 1952 and 1965 on 835 hectares of land between the west and east Don River valleys. Hancock’s planning team envisioned a self – contained community distinguished by consistent design principles and modernist style. Industry, commerce and major roads were arranged to be accessible but insulated from residential areas. Green spaces preserved natural watercourses and provided pedestrian routes between different neighbourhoods. An immediate critical and commercial success, Don Mills has been imitated in suburban development across Canada.

Before committing to orthodontic treatment, it is important to understand that you are also committing to a lifetime of retention of the final result.  As we age, the position or our lips, cheeks, tongue and soft tissues changes.  The soft tissues determine the position of our teeth which therefore also changes with time. Our teeth also have a tendency to move back to their old crooked position because of the fibres in our gums.  Once orthodontic treatment is complete, the retention phase of treatment is even more than the treatment important so teeth won't relapse or move into a more crooked position.  Attached is a photo of a type of retainer that I use in my practice called a lower lingual bonded retainer.  It's a stainless steel wire that is custom bent to adapt to the inside of your teeth and permanently fixed to the inside of your teeth with an orthodontic adhesive.  Flossing is certainly challenging, but this retainer will ensure that your teeth remain straight.  As long as it's in, they will.
